a sticky note with a question mark drawn on it

While cosmetic improvements have been among the most modern discoveries of the wonders of BOTOX, its history goes much further back than that. The small injections that you receive to help turn back the clock on aging started as something much different from how you know them today. Read on to learn about the origins of BOTOX and how this treatment came to be what it is today.

How Was BOTOX Discovered?

The modern BOTOX treatment’s origin story is rather macabre. Clostridium botulinum was first discovered by a scientist in Belgium after a botulism outbreak in 1895. It wasn’t until the next century in the 1920s that scientists’ curiosity peaked about this bacteria, and they started attempting to isolate the botulinum toxin. In the 1940s, it was finally isolated into crystalline form by Dr. Edward Schantz.

What Was BOTOX Originally Used For?

Once botulinum toxin was isolated, researchers and doctors across the country began utilizing it to address a wide variety of medical conditions. In 1987, it was used in a Vancouver dermatology/pediatric practice to address uncontrollable eye blinking and spasming. It was also used to address crossed eyes, also known as strabismus. Over the decades, researchers have found that it can be utilized in a variety of different ways, including treatment for cervical dystonia (muscle contractions in the neck that can cause head and posture issues) as well as excessive sweating.

How is BOTOX Used Today?

During early clinical trials, a patient mentioned that the BOTOX injections they were receiving for their eye spasms actually helped reduce the appearance of wrinkles in their forehead. This marked the moment when BOTOX injections entered the world of cosmetic procedures. Today, many people know that this treatment helps minimize wrinkles and fine lines on the face. However, over the course of the years, the FDA has approved BOTOX injections for the following treatments as well:

  • Chronic migraines
  • Overactive bladder
  • Incontinence
  • Cervical dystonia
  • Spasticity
  • Underarm sweating

The Future of BOTOX

Even with how far BOTOX has come since first being discovered in 1895, dentists, doctors, and researchers are still managing to find new uses for this treatment. Today, professionals are also looking into the positive effects that it can have for patients with TMJ dysfunction, acne scarring, keloids and hypertrophic scars, and a wide range of other uses. In a few more years, there’s no telling what this impressive and versatile treatment will be used for!
