When it comes to cosmetic dentistry, both porcelain veneers and dental bonding are two viable options that can enhance your teeth and give you the smile you’ve always dreamed of. But when it comes time to fix your smile, how do you know which one of these treatments is right for you? Here’s what you need to know about each of these treatments and what they’re capable of, so you’re able to make an informed decision that gives your smile the chance to really shine.
The Basics of Veneers and Dental Bonding
Even though both are used to address cosmetic issues, veneers and dental bonding are a little different. Veneers are thin, porcelain shells that are placed on the front surfaces of your teeth to alter their appearance. Dental bonding, however, consists of your dentist applying a natural-looking composite resin to your teeth to make minor changes to them.
Despite their differences, both treatments can offer many benefits to a compromised smile, including:
- Making chipped, cracked, or broken teeth appear restored.
- Closing small gaps between teeth.
- Correcting misshapen or short teeth.
- Masking stained and discolored teeth.
- Creating a uniform, beautiful smile.
Selecting The Right Treatment for You
Your dentist will be able to determine which treatment is appropriate for you—that said, veneers can typically be used to make more dramatic changes to your smile, especially if you have multiple flaws in multiple teeth or you’re really hoping for a revamped appearance. However, keep in mind that the veneers process typically takes 2-3 appointments; your dentist must first take detailed impressions of your teeth, then remove a small amount of enamel to make room for the veneers, and then finally place them once they’re customized and ready for your mouth. You will have to wear temporary ones in the meantime, too.
Dental bonding is ideal for when you need smaller, minor changes made much more quickly. It’s great for issues like stained, chipped, or cracked teeth, but does have some other applications. It’s minimally invasive compared to receiving veneers, it typically only requires a single appointment, and the results are immediate. It’s also much more cost-effective than veneers, as they can get expensive as you accumulate more—however, the longevity of dental bonding is shorter than that of veneers.
Although they have their respective differences and benefits, both veneers and dental bonding are worthwhile, effective options. Visit your dentist if you think one of these treatments is the answer you’ve been looking for to fix your smile.
